AAIS Annual Meeting in Eugene, Oregon, April 10-14, 2013. Italian Judaism: History, Culture, Representation
Abstract deadline: November 15, 2012 (early submissions are welcome).After the constitution of the American Association for Italian Studies Caucus on Italian-Jewish Studies and the success of the first two sessions on Italian-Jewish Studies at Pittsburgh (2011) and Charleston (2012), a series of sessions will be dedicated at the 2013 AAIS Meeting to the study of Italian Judaism in all its historical and cultural aspects (from antiquity to the present) and in the multiplicity of its interdisciplinary connections and interactions with Italian culture (literature, music, theater, cinema, visual arts), including the way in which the Jewish presence has been perceived, appreciated, recognized or opposed in Italy (from anti-Semitism to philo-Semitism).
This year in our sessions we would like to focus on the ghetto, its history, and its representations. Professor Kenneth Stow has been invited by the Judaic Studies Program for the Singer lecture which will be held Wednesday April 10 at 7:00pm, the day before the official beginning of the AAIS Confeence. Professor Stow will speak about the Roman Ghetto and the diaries of Anna Del Monte.
In addition to session and paper proposals relating to the ghetto, we welcome those in any area of Italian-Jewish studies, including: social and cultural life in the medieval, pre-modern and modern periods; Hebrew and Italian poetry throughout the ages; literature by or relating to Italian Jews; cinema; translation; ceremonial art and artists; synagogues; and relations with the Church.
Papers may be offered either in Italian or in English. Specialists in Italian Jewry from America, Italy, Europe and Israel are invited to apply. Please send 150-200 word abstracts in English or Italian and short bios to the members of the Steering Committee--Professors Gabriele Boccaccini (University of Michigan), Federica Francesconi (University of Oregon) and Scott Lerner (Franklin and Marshall College). Participants are expected to register to the conference
and to provide to their own travel and lodging expenses. In

the Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation
(ISSNAF).
This is an open session dedicated to Jewish-Italian tradition and literature. All topics and approaches are welcome, including contributions focusing on Italophone Jewish traditions outside of the borders of modern Italy (Switzerland, Eastern Adriatic, Greece, Albania, Malta, the Levant, Northern Africa and beyond). Papers on approaches to teaching Jewish Italy are welcome. We also welcome contributions by graduate students and independent scholars.
