Abstract

Sebbene alcuni studi critici abbiano rilevato e analizzato la presenza degli animali in alcune opere di Elsa Morante (e soprattutto per La Storia), pochi invece sono i contributi che approfondiscono questo tema nel primo romanzo della scrittrice, Menzogna e sortilegio (1948). Il saggio si propone dunque di analizzare le modalità con cui Elsa Morante accoglie l’animalità nel suo esordio letterario, in cui, sin dai primi capitoli, la narratrice-protagonista Elisa dichiara di trovarsi in compagnia di “un essere vivente non umano,” di cui solo alla fine svelerà l’identità. Si tratta del gatto Alvaro, compagno fedele della giovane per tutta la durata del racconto. Il rapporto Elisa-Alvaro risulta cruciale e se indagato ampiamente può schiudere orizzonti nuovi sull’esegesi dell’opera morantiana. A mio parere, non solo Alvaro rappresenta derridianamente “the extreme otherness” con cui l’essere umano si rapporta, ma gioca un ruolo fondamentale nella definizione dell’identità di Elisa che, oscillando tra umano e animale, sembra incarnare perfettamente ciò che Gilles Deleuze e Félix Guattari definiscono, in A Thousand Plateaus (1987), "divenire animale."

Nell'antologia The Penguin Book of International Gay Writing, a cura di Mark Mitchell c'è qualche pagina tolta del secondo romanzo morantiano, L'isola di Arturo. Mitchell ha scelto la traduzione inglese di Isabel Quigley che devo confessare di non aver letto mai prima... 
Per rappresentare l'amore gay nel romanzo Mitchell si riferisce alla scena fra Wilhelm Gerace e Stella, quando il secondo si è entrato in galera (nella Terra Murata). Il geloso Arturo spiava la coppia infelice: W. G., venuto alla galera per pregare per un segno d'affetto, e il disprezzo di Stella.

Quigley ha tradotto la parola "parodia" gettata a W.G. da Stella come "grotesque", che trovo interessante. Senza troppo allontanarsi dal senso letterale, forse... ma avrei preferito un'altra parola. Perchè non "parody"? "travesty"? "caricature"? 

Tra i conoscenti di Elsa Morante certamente si figuravano degli uomini gay - Luchino Visconti, Hans Werner Henze, Pier Paolo Pasolini, per nominarne tre.
Mi domando se l'omosessualità come viene raffigurata nel romanzo era concepita come una metafora? Un modo per parlare della costruzione del testo stesso? Romeo l'Amalfitano sogna dei fiori e delle api... che sempre mi ha fatto pensare della metafora delle api di cui scrive Seneca et al. In Casa dei Guaglioni ci sono due rapporti omosessuali (e misogini) instabili: all'inizio, Romeo e Wilhelm e poi Wilhelm e Stella.

Non ho ancora letto il “Pranzo di Natale” di Elsa Morante, scritto in forma di lettera a Goffredo Fofi, saggista, giornalista e critico cinematografico, lettarario e teatrale. “Il pranzo di Natale” è stato recentemente riscoperto grazie a Henry Beyle, piccola casa editrice milanese.

Ma non vedo l'ora di leggermelo- dovrei comprarmi una copia!

Il libro si occupa dell'eterna storia della passione amorosa: ma è davvero così eterna? Qui sono raccolti molti modi di intendere l'amore: l'obiettivo era di raccogliere le più belle storie d'amore della letteratura, del teatro e del cinema. Molti degli autori inclusisono italiani: Alberto Savinio, Giorgio Bassani, Francesco Jovine, Camilla Cederna, Nico Naldini, Marisa Bulgheroni, Roberto Alajmo e Antonio Pascate...
Viene inclusa anche la nostra Elsa Morante (pp. 9-14), il cui racconto "Catullo e Lesbia" apparve nel 1950.

Ora che il libro della corrispondenza morantiana è disponibile (titolato L’amata. Lettere di e a Elsa Morante, Einaudi, 2012; e mai titolo risulta più adatto vista l'importanza dell'amore nella scrittura e si potrebbe presumere anche nella vita di lei!) vi indico un articolo apparso nell'Espresso nel 2008 che riporta una lettera del 1948 di Elsa in cui la grande scrittrice parla di Moravia, del primo romanzo, dell'amore, della solitudine... John A. Flannery e Karen M. Smith nel suo Eco-Library Design (uscito nel 2014) discutono del Centro. Purtroppo, durante il mese che ho trascorso a Roma nel 2014, non sono riuscita a fare una visita al Centro Culturale Elsa Morante che si trova in periferia, nel quartiere EUR.  Infatti il centro fa parte del progetto del Dipartimento Periferie di Roma Capitale di costituire una rete di centri  culturali e polifunzionali nelle periferie romane. 
Il Centro Culturale  Elsa Morante è uno spazio polifunzionale dedicato alla cittadinanza, con particolare attenzione ai giovani (che non mi sorprende, dato l'affetto che la scrittrice romana nutriva sempre per i giovani e i bambini).

Call for Papers: Jewish Culture in Italy. Sydney, 1-4 July 2015

Professor David Malkiel of Bar-Ilan University is putting together a session on Jewish culture in Italy for the 8th Biennial Conference of the Australasian Centre for Italian Studies (ACIS), "Fertile Spaces, Dynamic Places: Mapping the Cultures of Italy." 
Those interested in participating please send  a title and short (100-200 words) abstract of your proposed presentation by January 28, 2015, to David.Malkiel@biu.ac.il

Since the earliest times, Italian culture and society have been suffused by a powerful sense of place. Whether one thinks of the waves of diasporic Italians who have journeyed to encounter new cultural vistas around the globe, or of the even larger numbers of women and men who have remained in the places where their families have lived for centuries, Italians have always been acutely sensitive to their spatial and physical setting. The organisers of the 8th Biennial ACIS Conference invite participants to consider the myriad ways in which Italians have been influenced by – and left their mark upon – the spaces and places around them. We welcome papers on any period in the general areas of: Italian Art History, Cinema, Cultural Studies, Economics and Business, History, Italians in Australia, Language Teaching and Acquisition, Linguistics and Socio-Linguistics, Literature, Migration Studies, Politics and Sociology and Anthropology.

Please submit panel sessions or proposals for individual papers (250-300 words in Italian or English) by 31 January 2015 to: acis.italian@sydney.edu.au

Proposals for panels should contain: the panel title; name of the convenor; brief description of the theme; indication of the participants and the provisional titles/contents of their papers.

Confirmation of acceptance of the proposals will be sent out to authors via e-mail on or by 31 March 2015.
